Chapter Twenty-seven

Two weeks later, Bobbie backed the ATV up to a fallen tree limb and carefully stepped out to secure the rope from it to the hitch so she could pull it to the wood pile and out of the path of the cattle. Six weeks without working on the ranch had almost driven her to madness, but her mother had finally cleared her to work as long as she didn’t lift things and spent most of her day in the ATV.

She knew she was an adult and her mom wasn’t her boss, but she also knew she wasn’t a good judge of when the appropriate time to go back to work was. She would’ve resumed her normal duties within a week or two and most likely would have made things even worse. She learned long ago to trust her mom to keep her safe. Besides, if she defied her mother’s wishes by getting back on the proverbial horse too soon, injuring herself even more, she never would’ve heard the end of it.

Riley was certainly glad to be back to work. She sat next to Bobbie in the passenger seat surveying her area. Riley had completely healed from her injuries other than little patches of missing hair. Bobbie and Riley had fallen into a comfortable schedule. It was hard to believe it had only been a few months since she rescued her from the wire.

“Let’s get this limb over to the pile and then get home for a shower before we head into town for your checkup with Grace,” Bobbie said.

She was excited but also nervous to see Grace again. She hadn’t seen her since the day she stopped by the house. They’d texted back and forth and talked on the phone a few times, but Bobbie was doing her best to give Grace the space she requested. Everything they’d done that evening had been very innocent, but she hadn’t stopped thinking about the way Grace’s fingers gently stroked her hair while they watched TV.

She didn’t recall one thing that happened on the show they watched, but she remembered every minute of Grace touching her. She’d never known contentment like she had in that moment, and every stitch of clothing stayed on. She wasn’t sure she would survive if things went any further.

Unfortunately, the phone conversation she overheard was still a mystery. Bobbie wasn’t sure how to ask her about it, or even if she should. As far as Grace knew, it had been a private conversation, and Bobbie wasn’t sure she was ready to admit she’d listened. In addition to that, she’d heard Grace reassure the person on the phone she wouldn’t tell anyone the details of whatever they were talking about. It wouldn’t be fair of Bobbie to press her to share the information. She’d have to be patient and allow Grace to tell her on her own, if she ever did. Add this to the list of things Bobbie didn’t know about Grace.

The past couple of weeks
